Mother's Day/Father's Day Ideas

I have never done this before, but I am going to link up to Kelly's Korner's Show Us Your Life this week!

We will start with Father's day because that one is easier on me...

I have the GREATEST father in the world. You could not ask for a better one. We are the spitting image of each other, but we could not be more different :)

Father's day is usually low key. Church in the morning followed by lunch at my dad's or grandparent's house. Sometimes we will do a card. Most times we do nothing. Our favorite thing is just spending time together.

Now on to Mother's day...

This has been one of the worst holiday's of my life for many years now. I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was only 13. I have also been struggling with infertility for the past 5ish years. Either of those would make this day hard, but combine them and it is excruciating.

Mom

Normally mother's day consists of going to the mother's day breakfast at church followed by the service and then lunch with family. I remember once at the breakfast the speaker was talking about our roles in life as a mother and/or daughter. In that moment I realized that I neither am nor do I have a mother. That was a life altering, gut wrenching moment in my life. The service is usually geared towards mothers and gifts are handed out. Another awkward moment. Everyone tries to include you and show you love, but when you heart is so broken it is hard to breathe much less celebrate.

I do have to say that I have the most wonderful step-mother a girl could ask for. She has been in my life for about 12 years now and has been such a blessing. She can never fill that void completely, but she is very much a safe place in my life.

Normally I am not good at mother's day gifts because I would rather rush it on past and pretend it never happened. Last year was different though. I got my step-mother and mother-in-law the cutest necklaces by Lisa Leonard (click here to go to her website)

This year is going to be completely different because for the first time in 14 years I am going to celebrate this day because I am EXPECTING! After 5 years and a round of IVF we are going to have a little one in September! I am so excited to get this started, and have been waiting so long, I am going to ask for a mother's day gift for myself this year (I am a mom. My baby just happens to be in my belly :))and I know just what I want. It just happens to be by Lisa Leonard as well. You can go HERE to see the necklace I want with our little ones name on it. Now I just have to figure out how to drop some not-so-subtle hints to my hubby :)

I am still looking around and thinking of ideas of what to give Craig this year! Hmmmm. Time to start thinking. I think I have one in my head!

I do have to comment on what Kelly mentioned in her post about remembering those who have loss or are experiencing infertility. I have been through both and I can attest to the aching heart those women will have that day. I plan to take action this mother's day. Whether through a card or a small gift I want to show those women love. Maybe just for a moment that day they will have hope or joy through the tears.
